YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD

YOU HAVE THE POWER

TO CHANGE THE WORLD

You know you are powerful.

You know that you matter.

You know you have the right to a good life.

You have a vision of a better life for yourself and your loved ones.  You have a vision of a better world. The vision that you have is shared by many people and would benefit even more. That is exactly why you are so powerful.

Your issues are the issues.  You speak for millions.  Your thoughts, your solutions, your actions, can change the world for everyone.

All large movements began with just a few people, or even just one person. You do not need a large group of like-minded people or to stage large demonstrations.  You do not need a lot of money or guns or to have a large following on social media.

The Fight for $15 is a great example of how much change a few people can create. The Fight for $15 movement has transformed the battle for living wages and unions in the U.S.

All you need is your own mind, and a decision to use it.  A commitment of a little of your time, to exercise your power. It is every citizen’s responsibility to communicate with elected officials. They need to hear from EVERYONE they represent, and frequently. You do not need to be a voter, or even eligible to vote, to contact YOUR representatives! Flood the phone lines! Keep their staff so busy there is no time for anything else.

JOIN THE ONE MINUTE REVOLUTION!

Do you have one minute to change the world?  Do you have one minute that you can spare to call an elected official about an issue that matters to you? How about one minute every month, or one minute every week?

ONE MINUTE REVOLUTION

HOW TO MAKE REVOLUTION IN ONE MINUTE

(THE EASY NON-VIOLENT WAY)

The foundation of the One Minute Revolution is at least one phone call per month and an additional 50 minutes of live action once a year. If just 1% of the adult population (about 2 million people) participated, one year would result in 25 million calls, plus 2 million live action events.

Part One: Put your elected officials in your contacts list in your phone.  Ideally this would include at minimum both federal senators and House representative, and state senator, representative, governor, and mayor, alderperson or council member, etc.  It is every citizen's responsibility to communicate with elected officials-even if you didn’t vote for them! How can they represent you if they don’t know what you want?!

US Congress Switchboard number: (202) 224-3121

Missouri: https://www.senate.mo.gov/LegisLookup/Default.aspx

Part Two: Think about an issue that matters to you and compose a brief statement.  The person answering the phone will only need your zip code and one or two sentences. Be concise and prepared. Be courteous.

“Hello, I’m calling from (Your zip code) to let Senator Josh Hawley know that I support a $15 an hour minimum wage.  In areas where the wage has increased small businesses have not suffered, prices have remained stable, and the economy has improved. All workers deserve a living wage.”

Wait to see if they have any questions, although usually they do not.  Sometimes you might have to wait, but most offices have an option to leave a voicemail.  Rarely do calls last longer than a minute.

Repeat at least once a month. (Optional step: set a reminder on your phone for regularly scheduled calls. Weekday mornings before lunch is often a good time.)

Part Three: Research a topic one question at a time. (Repeat as needed before returning to Part Two or progressing to Part Four.)

How much does the US government spend on the ACA, including administrative and other costs?

How much does the US government spend on Medicare, including administrative and other costs?

Medicaid? WIC? Veteran’s?

Spend a minute adding your figures and making some calculations.

How many taxpayers are there?

How much are US citizens paying for all forms of health insurance?

How much would Medicare For All Cost?

Part Four: Compose an email to an elected official with your research and conclusions, in one-minute segments.  Review it a few days and edit as needed.  Consider asking for a return phone call.

Dear Senator Hawley, I support Medicare For All. The US government is currently spending $1.2 trillion a year on all Medicare, Medicaid, ACA and other forms of insurance.  That’s about $3600 per capita (divided by US population at 330 million), and about $8400 per taxpayer (divided by 143 million taxpayers). Private citizens are spending about 2.3 trillion dollars. That’s $3.5 trillion a year.  The average cost of a single health insurance premium is over $7000 a year.  We spend more and get less than every other industrialized nation, and many that we consider to be less advanced. Medicare for All would cost this country less and improve public health.  I would like to know where the Senator stands on Medicare for All.  I would appreciate a return phone call.

Part Five: Go Live! Once a year set aside 50 minutes and show up! Attend a Town Hall, a rally, library board meeting, observe a judge, volunteer in a community group, etc.  oneminuterevolution.blogspot.com

PROTECT THE POWER OF

WE THE PEOPLE

AND REGISTER TO VOTE

Voting is the only power in the government that cannot be bought or sold. We the people do need more power, and the government needs many changes, but we must maintain what we currently have.

Your vote is your voice. Why aren’t you using it? You can use your vote as a form of protest with a write-in, including for people that are not running. And even if you don’t vote for candidates, you can vote for issues, especially at the local level, where voting has the most impact on day-to-day life.

And if not yourself, what about others? Minor changes in legislation can make a big difference to the poor, the elderly, homeless, and disabled.  Can you spend a few minutes registering on-line, and make a quick trip to the polls for local and state elections, to help someone else? And what about all the people that have had to fight so hard to gain the right to vote: can you take a moment and honor them?

Republicans and special interests are working hard to make it more difficult for people to vote. In the 2020 election, 70% of eligible voters were registered, and nine out ten voted- the highest turnout in decades, but balanced both right and left. At state and local levels, voter turnout is low. Republicans work hard year-round, to disqualify and restrict Democratic votes. By staying registered, especially as a Democrat, Libertarian, Green, or Independent, you will be part of shifting the power away from oligarchs and special interests.

The more registered voters there are, the more power honest politicians have against the lobbyists and special interests, and dishonest politicians.  Which means you have greater power.

“I am the ballot in your box...”

GENERAL STRIKE

WHAT IS ESSENTIAL?

It is NOT CEO’s, or Executives, “Job Creators” or Republican Elected officials!

The pandemic revealed the truth! Society cannot survive without fast-food workers, gas station attendants, grocery store clerks, delivery drivers, and most minimum wage, “unskilled labor” jobs.

WORKERS ARE ESSENTIAL!

WE NEED TO CLAIM OUR POWER!

ALL WORKERS DESERVE:

·         A MINIMUM WAGE OF $15 AN HOUR (OR MORE!)

·       FULL BENEFITS & RETIREMENT

·       GUARANTEED HOURS

·       SICK LEAVE AND PARENTAL LEAVE

·       VACATION

·       UNION REPRESENTATION

NOW IS THE TIME!

WE NEED A GENERAL STRIKE!
SHUTDOWN THE CITY, THE STATE, AND THE COUNTRY UNTIL WE HAVE A LIVING WAGE AND MEDICARE FOR ALL!
WHAT DAY IS GOOD FOR YOU?

PROGRESSIVE AGENDA

THE VAST LEFT-WING CONSPIRACY…

is fiction. What the USA calls “moderate” is right-of-center neo-liberalism. What we call “liberal” is middle of the road moderate. And because of this, many Leftists feel disenfranchised by the system.

But we are a powerful majority! And we cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions or candidates. Or despair that “the whole system needs to change,” therefore why do anything at all? There are many changes within our reach. Changes we can have if we act together, in unison. NOW.

We need to take a page from the Republican playbook. They can count on any candidate that is anti-choice, anti-immigration, and pro-gun.  Most Republicans and right-wing extremists will vote a straight red ticket for these three issues, regardless of what else is at stake.

The Left needs to learn from this and demand a similar devotion from the Democrats on three core issues:

1.   $15 an hour minimum wage and a union for every job. (And it really should be $22/hour now. A living wage is in relation to the cost of living.)

2.   Medicare for All/ Universal Health Care

3.   Free College

Can you spare one minute today to call your Democratic representatives and candidates and ask them to pledge commitment to these three issues?               Oneminuterevolution.blogspot.com

MISSOURI EMPLOYMENT, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND WAGES

WAGES IN MISSOURI

Minimum Wage | Missouri Labor (mo.gov)

The state minimum wage for 2021 is $10.30/hr.

Employers engaged in retail or service businesses whose annual gross income is less than $500,000 are not required to pay the state minimum wage rate. Employers not subject to the minimum wage law can pay employees wages of their choosing. For more information, please contact the United States Department of Labor.

MANY businesses are exempt from minimum wage. Did you know the average net income of a McDonald’s franchise is only $150,000 a year?  (And they cost one million dollars.) And other fast food franchises average $66,000.

Most small and medium size businesses do not fight the unfair advantages that corporations are given- construction grants, TIFs, Sales tax incentives. They only fight wage increases. That’s because workers don’t fight back.

UNEMPLOYMENT IN MISSOURI

Missouri employment laws are structured to benefit the employer, and to keep a surplus of unemployed workers so wages stay low.  In Missouri, only those that profit from labor matter. A lot of this is disguised as “freedom.”

Only the employer pays unemployment insurance, and the employer pays whether someone is getting benefits or not.  If payment is not awarded to the employee, it is not reimbursed to the employer. It stays in the State’s trust fund. Employers fight unemployment claims because they don’t want their insurance rates to go up.

The State does little for the unemployed worker.  EDD offices are chronically understaffed and overworked. This is not to save taxpayers money; this is so the state doesn’t have to assist workers. They require only three work searches.  They do not require people to come into the offices, or for employers to interview those on benefits.

Employers often complain that “no one wants to work” but many employers automatically disqualify certain applicants.  The employer has freedom to reject you without reviewing your skills for any reason or no reason at all.

Workers in Missouri are not “saving” money by not paying unemployment insurance.  It’s just another rip-off disguised as “freedom.” (Similar to “you have the freedom to work without paying union dues” scam.) Workers would have more protection if they paid into unemployment insurance.

BREAKS? IF YOU’RE LUCKY

Missouri, and most states, do not require employees get a break for any reason, including going to the bathroom.  It is also not a Federal law.

If an employer DOES give breaks to employees, the Federal government regulates how breaks are paid.  (Beware- people go to the Federal site and see the rules for how breaks must be paid and think the break is guaranteed.)

States CAN require that employees be given a break.  But it is state by state, and only five states require it. And Missouri is not one of them. Meal and Rest Breaks: Your Rights as an Employee | Nolo Osha requires bathrooms be available, but only disabled workers are guaranteed the right to use the bathroom.

We cannot allow this to continue! Workers need to demand laws requiring adequate breaks at Federal and state levels!

EVERYONE CAN BE WEALTHY

EVERYONE CAN BE WEALTHY

BUT WE CAN’T AFFORD

THESE MONEY HOARDING BILLIONAIRES ANYMORE

TIME TO DECIDE: Is the impossible dream of being a billionaire more important to you than a higher standard of living for everyone?

There is enough for everyone! Enough food, water, land, housing, medicine, and things like paid time off, vacations and travel, toys, music, sporting equipment, etc.

It is the distribution of resources that are creating our problems! Before World War 2, before the Technological Age, the world population was never more than 2 billion. It is now 7.8 billion. And humans are using resources at a rate never experienced before. Even if the population were still 2 billion, we would be facing this crisis at some point. Things are too unequal.

We could all be “rich.” Let’s look at what wealth really is.

WEALTH

Wealth is having more than enough.

Wealth is an abundance.

Abundance exists in nature.

Wealth is specific to humans.

TWO WAYS TO CREATE WEALTH

Wealth can only be created by two things: exploitation of natural resources and human labor. Wealth only exists when there is more than what is needed. A human alone, eating and using only the resources necessary for survival, would still need to labor, but would not create wealth for someone else.

Natural resources can be depleted. Human labor exists as long as humans exist, and without wealth.

Natural resources plus labor can create wealth. And human labor can create wealth on its own. For example: A tour guide or other non-material service (labor).  A tour bus (natural resources turned into a bus using human labor).

Money and currency are the main way we exchange labor and natural resources.

If I have enough extra to give you or loan you something, that is wealth. That is wealth for both of us.

DEBT IS WEALTH

The distribution of wealth can also create wealth (interest). And the distribution of wealth is performed by human labor (like loan officers, bankers, etc).

If I set up an unfair economic arrangement (by use of force, or coercion, or persuasion, or contentment) and you accept the arrangement, that is still wealth.

If you work and create the item (or money, or credit) that I am loaning or giving you, that is still wealth.

Even if you cannot pay your debts, a debt is wealth.

THE U.S. DOLLAR IS BASED ON DEBT INTEREST

Until 1933 the dollar was backed by gold. The Federal Reserve had to keep enough gold to cover 40% of its demand notes. The Gold Standard is now obsolete.

The U.S. Government's promise has replaced gold. But all of the U.S. Government's money is from taxes (income, excise, and social insurance, and any interest derived from investing taxpayer funds). The U.S. Government does not produce any wealth of its own. It is really the taxpayer's promise that backs the U.S. dollar.

New money is created when the banks make a loan.  The Treasury prints money for the Federal Reserve. (They can “unprint” money, too, but this has little effect on the “mundane” economy, beyond balancing the books, as in 2008.)

The banks (not the government) earn money from the interest.  When the banks make bad loan decisions, like in 2008, the government “bails out” the banks with taxpayer money.  Even though the banks did not lose their own money or do anything to earn the money.

In 2008, the banks got paid twice for crashing the global financial system.  The banks got bailout money and they kept all the houses. The people that lost their homes still had to pay their taxes to the U.S. government or go to jail.

Banks are supposed to pay taxes on the profits they make from loan interest payments.  The U.S. Tax Code allows banks to define their profits as net zero. They do not usually pay taxes.  When banks do pay taxes, they pay extraordinarily little.

THE FEDERAL DEBT AND THE FEDERAL DEFICIT

The national debt is accumulated deficits.

A deficit is a shortage of money.

The U.S. Government has a $23 trillion deficit. $23 trillion divided by 327 million people (the entire population of the U.S.) equals $70,337 per person.

Every single person (babies, retirees, disabled - everyone) in this country would have to pay an extra $70,337 in taxes to level that shortage. To do that each person would have to earn an extra $200,962 in their lifetime and pay 35% of that in taxes.

A person working full time and making federal minimum wage ($15,080 a year) would need to work an extra 13 years and four months to earn $200,962.

FREELOADERS AND HOARDERS

Banks are freeloaders (leeches, really), and so are large corporations.  Large corporations do not pay their fair share of taxes.  Amazon made $11 billion dollars profit in 2018.  They did not pay any taxes.  Their tax return showed that they were owed $129 million in tax breaks.

Since the minimum wage does not cover the cost of living, taxpayers also subsidize corporations by supporting low wage workers with the Earned Income Tax credit, welfare like Food stamps and Medicaid, and other government programs. Welfare is really paid to the rich.

Most wealthy people pay a lower percentage of taxes than minimum wage workers.  In 1944 the tax rate for someone earning the equivalent of $2.5 million today was 94 percent.  Today it is 37%. We need to raise the taxes on the wealthy. A higher tax bracket would prevent the accumulation of excessive wealth.

We also need to charge transaction tax on stock market purchases, close the carried interest loophole, and limit inherited wealth.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO WORK

Wealthy people do not always work, and when they do, it is rarely the “essential work” that our society requires. We need to require at least one year of civic service, at the very least, from everyone.

And if everyone worked, we could all work less.  To have all these advances like automated check outs, and agricultural machinery that can replace back breaking human labor, and to not use them because “they are taking away someone’s job” is ridiculous.

Labor (and resources) need to be divided fairly.  The people who worked through the Covid pandemic are worth billions.  Not Jeff Bezos.  And Bezos should not be sitting on his yacht having meetings on how to hoard more money while his employees work without a living wage, benefits, or union representation.

TRASH IS TO WEALTH WHAT SHITTING IS TO EATING

Trash is also a form of wealth. A wealth of the wrong kind. Packaging, plastic and paper grocery bags, used motor oil, fast food ketchup packets, disposable diapers- all of these things were created by human labor and natural resources. Our trash will outlive us and our money.

Recycling is reaching its limit of usefulness.  And recycling requires resources.  Those plastic grocery bags? It takes more resources to recycle them then to make more. And even the recycled ones only more plastic bags and packaging.

Our trash is poisoning our environment, now and hundreds of years in the future. Humans require a very narrow set of circumstances to survive- a 100-degree temperature range, a certain ratio of oxygen and water, etc.  If you are 60 years old or younger and have an average life expectancy in the US of 77 years, you will experience water shortages, supply chain breakdowns, more pandemics, and grid disruptions, with more and more frequency unless we change our ways.

What has been happening since 2019 and Covid will only increase.  Even if we don’t have another global pandemic.  And once the disruptions and shortages being, they will snowball. Those of us in developed countries, that are the most grid dependent, will suffer the most.

We not only need those computer chips for our phones and televisions, we need them for almost everything. Stocking up on toilet paper is not going help when public utilities aren’t working.

We need to start thinking about wealth differently.  We are producing (and consuming) more than is necessary simply for the benefit of a small percentage of people that contribute nothing and give very little. We need to start talking to our reps and each other about a new and better future for all of us. (Except those lazy billionaires.) oneminuterevolution.blogspot.com

GET A JOB!

GET A JOB!

This is never said to someone that has inherited money, or stay at home mom, or someone who lives off an investment portfolio or rental property. It’s not about work.

WHY ISN’T EVERYONE REQUIRED TO WORK?  In many countries people are required to serve in the military or do community work.  Our society would only benefit from requiring everyone to serve in the military, peace corps, and or local community services.

And beyond the one- or two-year requirement for some sort of civil service, there should always be community jobs available. Not just picking up trash but working in various government offices and learning how they work, and in that way keeping our communities strong.

There should be plenty of jobs to suit every person’s abilities, as well as develop new and useful skills! And every neighborhood should have a plan to respond to any emergency situations- like natural disasters, pandemics, or widespread grid disruptions. By paying people in our community to maintain our community we all prosper.

The City of St. Louis could start this process by making CITY JOBS FOR CITY RESIDENTS ONLY. (And people with vacant properties that do not reside in the city should not be allowed to rack up three years of unpaid property taxes. St. Louis City generates 4 billion in property taxes but collects less than a third of that. We cannot afford these out of town absentee landlords any longer!)

THE BOSS NEEDS YOU TO PAY HIM

THE BOSS NEEDS YOU TO PAY HIM

From the United Automobile Worker magazine, 1937:

“What did you tell that man just now?”

“I told him to hurry.”

“What right do you have to tell him to hurry?”

“I pay him to hurry.”

“How much do you pay him?”

“Four dollars a day.”

“Where do you get the money?”

“I sell products.”

“Who makes the products?”

“He does.”

“How many products does he make in a day?”

“Ten dollars’ worth.”

“Then, instead of you paying him, he pays you $6 a day to stand around and tell him to hurry.”

“Well, but I own the machines.”

“How did you get the machines?”

“Sold products and bought them.”

“Who made the products?”

“Shut up. He might hear you.”

CALL PARSON ON HIS BUL****

“NO ONE WANTS TO WORK BECAUSE THEY GET MORE ON UNEMPLOYMENT!”

Let’s see the proof of these claims:

Were these positions chronically understaffed before the shut down?

Does this position actually pay what is advertised and do they pay payroll? (IE are they paying into unemployment?)

How do they know the people turning down the jobs are on unemployment?

Where do they advertise their jobs? EDD website? Indeed? Monster? Social Media?

How many responses have they gotten?

How many had the necessary skills?

How many people were offered the position?

How many did they interview? (In other words, how many people are they automatically disqualifying?)

And the May 2019 payroll, how many people were on it and how many labor hours were there?  Compared to now?

The Republicans are using an alleged “worker shortage” as an excuse to end federal unemployment in Missouri.

It is a lie. The maximum unemployment benefit in Missouri is $320 a week. With the $300 extra federal the total is $620 week.  $620 a week is $15.50 an hour for 40 hours.

Ask Parson to show us the breakdown of workers by pay and occupation, and by county, receiving federal unemployment funds.  Statistics can always be skewed, but neither the unemployment figures nor the “jobs added” back up the “worker shortage” claim. Jobs report April 2021: Hiring boom goes bust (cnbc.com)

For some it might be more, and for some it is the same, and for others it is less, but we need it.  These federal funds have kept our state economy strong!

And we already paid for it!

This is taxpayer money, not GOP money!

CALL

GOVERNOR PARSON

AND DEMAND

FEDERAL UNEMPLOYMENT

REMAIN IN PLACE!

573-751-3222

McDonald’s workers are on strike May 19th!

It turns out our society considers fast food workers and janitors and cooks and truck and delivery drivers ESSENTIAL! What we don’t need are Republican Governors and State Senators, Executives, or CEOs.

We deserve $15 an hour and a union, plus benefits, guaranteed hours, sick leave, and holiday pay!

If we organized a General Strike in solidarity, or on another day, we would win a living wage for working people in this country!

NOW IS THE TIME!
